FAQs
1. What should I wear to Gi and NoGi classes?
For Gi classes, wear a properly fitted Jiu-Jitsu gi (kimono) and belt. Under the gi, students should wear a rash guard and compression shorts or spats for comfort, hygiene, and mobility. For NoGi classes, wear a rash guard and grappling shorts or spats—no pockets, buttons, or zippers allowed. If you're attending a free trial class, we provide loaner gis, and you’re welcome to wear a t-shirt and athletic shorts underneath if you don’t have grappling gear yet.
2. What do I do about shoes inside the academy?
All training on the mats is done barefoot to ensure cleanliness and safety. Please leave your shoes at the door and wear indoor-only sandals or slides in the lobby or locker areas.
3. Are there changing rooms and showers available at Valor Jiu-Jitsu?
Yes. We offer two full locker rooms—one for men and one for women—equipped for changing and storing personal items. In addition, we have two individual restrooms, each with its own private shower, available for all members who prefer more privacy. These facilities are maintained daily for cleanliness and convenience.
4. What are the hygiene expectations for members?
Cleanliness is essential for health and respect. All students must keep nails trimmed, wear clean gear, and maintain good personal hygiene.
5. Can I wear jewelry while training?
No. All jewelry must be removed before stepping on the mat, including rings, necklaces, earrings, watches, and piercings, to prevent injury to yourself or your training partners.
6. What is the etiquette when training at Valor Jiu-Jitsu?
Respect is key. Always treat your training partners, coaches, and staff with courtesy. Listen to your instructors, train with control, and prioritize safety and teamwork.
7. What should I call the instructor?
Students typically address instructors as “Coach” or “Professor” (for black belts), depending on rank and preference. If you're unsure, "Coach" is always respectful and appropriate.
8. Will bowing be part of training at Valor Jiu Jitsu?
Yes. Bowing is part of our training culture and is viewed as a gesture of mutual respect. Much like a handshake in modern times, bowing acknowledges trust, sportsmanship, and gratitude between students and instructors.
9. Do I need prior experience to start training?
Not at all! We welcome beginners and offer structured classes for all levels. Our instructors will guide you based on your skill level and goals.
10. How do I cancel my membership?
Memberships are month-to-month with no contract. To cancel, simply provide 30 days’ written notice before your next billing date.
11. Can I host special events at Valor Jiu-Jitsu?
Yes! We offer space rentals for private events, seminars, birthday parties, and more. Contact us for availability and details.
12. Can out-of-town visitors drop in for training?
Yes, we welcome visiting students and travelers! Just let us know in advance when you plan to come, arrive early to sign our waiver, and be ready to train respectfully, be a good partner, and have fun. Whether you're passing through or in town for a few days, you're always welcome on the mat at Valor Jiu-Jitsu.
